In PDF form here: Mixture or Unity by S. Abonyi
In chemical terminology, there are “solutions” and there are “mixtures.”
It is known that water doesn’t dissolve in oil even though both are liquids. There is no deeper chemical knowledge needed…every housewife knows this.
“Solutions” are soluble liquids, like tea and milk or coffee and milk, that when united together result in an one-component liquid. In a “solution”, the cells form an unity and the initial liquids are no longer easily separable. “Mixtures“, on the other hand, are made of separable components, such as water and oil. They can be shaken together, but overtime, will separate again, isolating one component from the other.
It is also known by the children of God that, in the Scriptures, God warns his chosen ones, Israel, of the dangers of mixing with Gentiles. He forbids marriage or any kind of contract with them.
„Now it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all mixed multitude.” (Neh. 13:3)
„In those days also saw I Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab: And their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people. And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.” (Neh. 13:23-25.)
We can see from these verses, that God forbids the mixing of the saints (the chosen ones) with unholy pagans. If they were disobedient, and would nonetheless mix with them, it would result in a MIXTURE in God’s eyes, not a solution! These two are not meant to be together.
It is forbidden to mix anything of different kinds, neither is it allowed for Israelites to mix with pagans, nor for different kinds of plants and animals to mix. (Lev. 19.19)
God is absolute, clean and holy. There is no place for mixture of any kind to take place within His kingdom.
It may seem surprising to us that Nehemiah would prohibit marriage between the Jews and Gentiles. He „contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God .” (Neh. 13.25)
We can see similar examples in the New Testament, as well, where God’s Word calls for the eliminating of MIXTURES:
„Be you not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for you are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be you separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” (2 Cor 6:14-18.)
We know the parable of the Narrow path and the Broad way in Matthew 7.13-29, which (be no misunderstanding) speaks about believers. The believers walking on the narrow path have entered the narrow gate and keep walking on the narrow path, continuously following Jesus. Jesus is the gate and the way, and only in Him can we enter the narrow gate and walk the narrow path. This is the journey of the „lambs” of God, who are only a few in number according to the Scripture. But there are many “false believers” („goats”), who are carnal, hypocrites, living in sin, religious, whose names are not written in the Book of Life, and of whom the Lord will declare, “I never knew you.” (Matt. 7:23) They have entered the broad gate and are walking on the broad way leading to eternal torments, unless they repent, while they still can.
There are, of course, a very few true believers of Christ who are obedient to the Lord and have, or are, separating themselves from unholy “marriages” (from the community of false “churches”, denominations.) Unfortunately, only some were sufficiently courageous to free themselves from these systems. The majority have remained in the denominational “churches”, suffering in their souls but unable to find a way out. They are like Lot in Sodom, who needed to encounter “angels” to be freed and who need to be encouraged to break free of the old system.
Jesus as High Priest is praying for unity:
„For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received [them], and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world………That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.” John 17:8-14, 21.
Jesus speaks here about the unity of the Father and the Son. He wants a similar unity between true believers: “…that they all may be one…as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee , that they also may be one in us.
Considering the teachings above, Jesus is talking about the unity of His children as a “SOLUTION!” He is NOT talking about a “MIXTURE!” Only His people are capable of creating a solution in which they can fully dissolve into one another, forming real unity, with the help/guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Many people speak about “unity” today but the question is:
- What kind of unity would that be?
- With whom should we be united?
- What are the characteristics of this unity?
After all, this is clear, that unity doesn’t mean the man-made mixture of different denominational “churches”, nor any common demonstrations held by a mixture of godly men and worldly men. All these kinds of attempts try to bring organized unity between different components, which are not meant to be mixed together, and are displeasing to God. Jesus is talking about a unity of His few disciples who have entered through the narrow gate and are following Him on the narrow path. These have dissolved their own lives with His and the Father’s and have formed a total unity among themselves by the Holy Spirit. This is the only unity He recognizes among His people.
Of course a “goat” can repent and become a “lamb” of God, but this is the exclusive work of the Spirit. It is not a question of people performing spiritual care or discipleship training. Repentance is the result of God’s supernatural rebirth process. In these days, a multitude of things, such as denominational barriers, institutionalized churches, the willful covering of truth, and much more, makes it very hard to see the blessed unity of the real believers as they glorify Jesus with their deeds and their acts of true unity. These are, therefore, hardly visible to the world.
Cleaning the „threshing floor” is Jesus’ job who uses a vane for this work to be done. (Mattew 3.12.) Because of that, we can see much shaking, breaking, destructions of communities, etc, to separate the true and holy things and people from the false things and teachings. This must happen so that out of the union of His holy sheep, He can build a real Church so strong that even „the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”. (Mattew 16.18)
We are the witnesses of this work which is unfolding before our eyes in the present. It is God’s work in progress. The people blinded by false teachings, however, could think this is the work of Satan, who causes deliberate chaos amongst believers. Whoever is seated on the throne in Heaven with Jesus, though, can see these things unfolding in the right perspective, and God’s real will in all of it. They need to pray for true “unity.”
May the Lord give his people hearing ears and seeing eyes, so they may understand and take part in this work for His glory!
